When a new business opens (or re-opens) in Salem, it is something to celebrate. This is especially true for our downtown spaces, some that have remained vacant since the economy began to struggle.

It was a cheerful time at the opening of the downtown Quiznos on the corner of Court and High streets in the historic T.G. Bligh Building.

The Bligh Building, named after Thomas Gregor Bligh, was constructed in 1923 and still is full of character, maintaining its Mission Revival-style design.

The Quiznos space vacated last summer was reopend by Sarah Nolan Kupillas, a South Salem High School graduate who left her franchise cookie store in Clackamas Town Center to return to Salem as the Quiznos new owner and operator.

The shop's grand opening was on one of Salem's sunny winter days, which accentuated the shop's bright colors and decorated balloons that were tied with coupons by Terry Nolan, Nolan-Kupillas' father.

The Quiznos team was greeted by Bob and Ann Sticha, Sandy Manning and Clark and Donna Hamor from the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber Business Development Director Kyle Sexton coordinated the group, which comes to help "cut the ribbon" with large glass scissors.

This was the first official ribbon cutting for new Salem Mayor Anna Peterson, who provided words of thanks and encouragement to the newest downtown business owner.

Nolan-Kupillas' friends, including Kira Angel, and Quiznos fans, including Mary Ivie and her granddaughter Jaida Carodine, came to try out one of the special complimentary sandwiches the staff provided to the guests.
