WALNUT CREEK -- A man wielding a handgun robbed a Quiznos sandwich shop this evening.

The robber walked into the shop, at 2236A Oak Grove Road, just before 6 p.m. and pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun, Walnut Creek police Sgt. Lanny Edwards said.

He walked behind the counter and took money from the cash register, as well as the sandwich shop's owner's wallet. Several customers were inside at the time but they were not robbed. The robber than ran outside and was last seen running east through the shopping center's parking lot.

No one was injured.

The robber was white or a light-skinned black man, 6 feet tall with a thin build. He wore a turtleneck that covered the bottom half of his face with and a hat that covered the top half. He wore sunglasses, bluejeans and a green military-style jacket with a hood.

Police searched for him with the assistance of a Concord police dog, but he escaped.

The business is in the same shopping center as a Panda Express restaurant that was the target of an attempted robbery last Thursday. In that incident, an armed man tried to pull open the doors of the restaurant after closing time when employees inside refused to let him in after he displayed what appeared to be a silver handgun.
