Jimmy John's, Quiznos both opening soon in downtown Kalamazoo Posted: 27 Dec 2010 12:44 PM PST Published: Monday, December 27, 2010, 3:43 PM Updated: Monday, December 27, 2010, 3:56 PMKALAMAZOO — Two new sandwich shops are opening in downtown Kalamazoo — one this week and the other next week.Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches is expected to open Tuesday at 232 W. Michigan, in between Andrea's Cafe and Theo & Stacy's and across from the Kalamazoo County Court House. The locally owned franchise is using 1,600 square feet of space in the building that's owned by Portage-based developer MAVCON. The franchise is the fifth Jimmy John's in the Kalamazoo and Portage area. The Gazette was unable to reach the franchise owner for comment this afternoon. A few blocks away, meanwhile, a Quiznos sandwich shop is expected to open Jan. 3 on the Portage Street side of the Kalamazoo Commons building. The mixed-use building, owned by Portage developer Meyer C. Weiner and Co., contains the Rave Cityplace 14 movie theater. The 1,000 square foot shop is the third Quiznos franchise owned by Ravi Singh. Singh also has shops in Grand Rapids and in the West Main Plaza on Drake Road in Kalamazoo. Singh is moving the franchise from Gull Road to downtown Kalamazoo, he said. When Pfizer Inc.'s Animal Health research division was based at its Richland farm, Singh's Quiznos shop there received about 20 percent of its business from Pfizer workers."Now they're downtown," he said, referring to the 2009 consolidation of Animal Health to Pfizer's Portage Street building No. 300, a block away from the Kalamazoo Commons. In addition to capturing lunch business from Pfizer, Singh said he hopes to also bring in bar patrons by staying open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and closed on Sunday, he said. It will also offer delivery. Singh, a former information technology worker for Stryker Corp.'s Medical division, has owned Quiznos franchises since 2004.
