You may have noticed a few less options when it comes to sub shops. Three area Quiznos have closed in the last six months, leaving many people wondering what happened.

It's the sandwich chain that made its mark by toasting.

"They've got that wonderful toasted sub that everybody seems to like," said Professor George Cook of the University of Rochester's Simon Graduate School of Business.

But the Quiznos locations on Mount Hope Avenue and West Henrietta Road in Rochester and on Empire Boulevard in Webster now sit empty.

"Quiznos obviously took off and I think at one time we had five or so in this area," said Cook. "I think we're down to two now."

"Quiznos stores are individually owned and operated so there are various reasons for store closures," said Ellen Kramer, executive vice president of communications for Quiznos.

Kramer says sometimes it's personal reasons, other times it's the economy.

Cook has another reason.

"I've done quite a bit of research on the subject," said Cook. "I think there are more operational problems than there are quality of food problems."

He refers to a number of class action lawsuits filed by store owners, saying Quiznos makes it difficult for them to turn a profit.

"Many franchisees seem to say that the business model they have just doesn't work," said Cook. "In other words it's too costly, they can't gather margins that make sense and a lot of them are dropping out."

He says that makes it even tougher to compete, especially against market leader Subway, whose "Five Dollar Footlong" campaign has been a huge success.

"If you don't have the tools to compete with them on an even landscape, you're not going to win," said Cook.

Quiznos didn't have a comment for any specific issues with store owners.

"It is our intention to reopen many of those stores as soon as we can with our new store design and our great new products," said Kramer.

Cook says that just may happen.

"Not a dead program by any stretch because people do like the product," said Cook. "When consumers like the product they go searching for it."

There are still two Quiznos open in the area, one in Canandaigua and another in the food court at Marketplace Mall. Cook says that's a strategy the company may look at: opening locations inside malls and convenience stores, which is much cheaper than having a stand alone store.
