Quiznos closes today, will reopen Tuesday under a new name, business plan Posted: 25 Sep 2010 08:04 AM PDT A popular sub sandwich shop in Lenoir is closing its doors for a couple of days, but it will reopen under a new name. Quiznos, located at 212 Blowing Rock Blvd., will serve customers under its current name for the last time Saturday. The toasted sub sandwich restaurant will be closed Sunday and Monday. When it opens again Tuesday, Sept. 28, it will do so under the name of Subonas. Bob LeGore, owner/operator of the Lenoir Quiznos, is not selling. He's simply severing ties with Quiznos and starting Subonas, a sanwdich shop of his own design. It will remain at the same location in Lenoir. "I just felt like it was time to go out on my own and try my own business model," LeGore said. "Quiznos had reached a point where its business model did not seem to be working, and they were closing a lot of stores." According to various Web sites, Denver-based Quiznos, which started 30 years ago, closed about 1,000 stores between 2007-2009. LeGore, who made Quiznos corporate office aware of his decision, said two of the three locations in Hickory have shut down along with one in Boone and Statesville. Rather than face that possibility, LeGore opted to branch out on his own, choosing to stay in the location where Quiznos has been since it opened here five years ago. "Business has been pretty good here," said LeGore, who lives in Hickory but has been affiliated with Lenoir for 35 years in the fast food business. "I knew this was a real good restaurant town when we started. That's why I picked Lenoir. We did real well when we first started, but it's been a bit downhill the last couple of years, just because of the economy." Subonas still will offer toasted sandwiches, though they will be served on a kaiser roll rather than a sub roll. LeGore said he developed the name from the words "Sub," "on" and "a," combining them to form Subonas. The shop will offer traditional sandwiches with meats like ham, turkey, chicken and roast beef, along with salads, soups, chips, cookies and drinks. They'll just be on buns rather than rolls. "We'll still have some of the favorites, but we'll offer some variety, too," LeGore said. That variety will come in allowing patrons to build their own sandwich, from bread, meat and cheese to toppings. "You can put it together yourself, and we'll build it for you," he said. LeGore added that he thought Quiznos had taken the wrong approach with some aspects of the business, and he hopes to improve those areas. Chief among them are a simpler menu and lower prices. He said most sandwiches will cost $3.99, with flatbread sandwiches priced around $2.99 and salads at $3.99. LeGore said the new sandwich store will continue to offer delivery to businesses each day of the week between the hours of 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The closure Sunday and Monday will allow LeGore and his employees to reprogram the cash register with new prices, make changes of all signage from Quiznos to Subonas and prepare to open under the new banner. "We're going to be starting brand new; it's an exciting time for me," LeGore said. "I'm a bit anxious about it. When it's your idea, you always want to see how people will react. But we've had success here. I enjoy it here and have met a lot of nice people. Hopefully, the people of Lenoir will like the change and continue to support me."
