Additional Metro Fare Hikes Start Today Posted: 01 Aug 2010 11:27 AM PDT Heads up. The second round of Metro fare increases to bridge a $189 million budget gap starts today. Below you'll find a round up of the changes, adding on to those implemented last month. Unfortunately, if anyone were hoping for an uneventful rollout of the increases -- I guess you haven't been living in D.C. for very long -- then sorry to dash your dreams; the "peak of the peak" surcharge itself will be rolled out in two phases. The 20-cent surcharge for riding Metrorail during peak2 hours -- weekdays 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m. -- will be charged only during the evening peak. The morning peak will remain cheaper until the end of August. According to Dr. Gridlock, the stuttered implementation stems from memory limitations within the fare gates, namely for calculating paper farecards. Smartrip cards aren't subject to the problem, but the two will be treated equally. Metro could lose $200,000 to $375,000 from the unanticipated hurdle of using Nintendo-era technology. Metrorail passes: Weekly Short Trip Pass will be $32.35, the Weekly Fast Pass will be $47 and the Transit Link Card for MARC and VRE riders will be $102. Farecards: Using paper cards, instead of a SmarTrip card, will cost an additional 25 cents per trip. SmarTrip cards: Starting August 29, SmarTrip cards will be REDUCED to $2.50. In conclusion, take out those old Quiznos sandwich cards and buy yourself a SmarTrip card already. Five Filters featured article: "Peace Envoy" Blair Gets an Easy Ride in the Independent.
