Darren Reed's road rage was described by a motorist who watched him punching another driver in the face as "barbarian and traumatizing.''

"He was extremely violent,'' prosecutor David Kirk said Monday, quoting from the statement the woman gave police following the March 17 incident.

Ontario Court Justice Andrew Buttazzoni heard Reed also broke the young man's sun glasses and kicked off a side mirror from his vehicle.

Reed, 41, pleaded guilty to assault and mischief under $5,000.

The run-in occurred at 12:15 p.m. after the victim pulled out from the Quiznos Sub parking lot onto Great Northern Road.

The complainant told police he signalled to make a lane change as he headed south, then signalled to get into the left turn lane at McNabb Street.

Reed pulled up beside him the young man and hit his bumper, Kirk said.

"The guy started to yell and rant at him,'' the assistant Crown attorney said.

When the victim said "calm down old man,'' Reed "went into a rage.''

Reed tried to pull the other driver through the window, then broke his sunglasses and started to punch the left side of his face.

Defence counsel Mike Adams said the young man cut his client off, then bumped into his bumper.

Reed, who had a child in his car, "blew up.''

"It was improper. He shouldn't have,'' Adams said, adding "it was completely out of character.''

Buttazzoni agreed to a Crown-defence submission for a conditional discharge.

"It's a close call for the conditional discharge,'' he told Reed. "The nature of the assault makes it arguable whether it's contrary to the public interest (to grant the discharge).

But for the extenuating circumstances, the judge said he didn't know if the accused would be the recipient of the discharge.

He ordered Reed to make a $500 donation to Algoma Residential Community Hospice and pay $160 restitution for the damage to the mirror and sun glasses.
